Along the path of Pagga translated.
|
Langs Pagga's paadje is about the last occupants of a hut made of sods on Texel.
There's a footpath along 'de Paggaweg' now, but there's nothing among the trees and brambles that reminds us of Antje Dekker from Oudeschild who ended up at the Mient as an unwed mother.
Nothing about their lives, the harsh and poor existence in the dunes, the children she bore and the children they lost.
Irene and Monica Maas have been able to reconstruct the life stories of these people via written tradition, cuttings and diary notes. They take us back to the unspoilt landscape of the Westermient, an area spoken highly of by Jac. P. Thijsse for its outstanding beauty, but in which life was hard and poor. Only the fittest could survive.
